Swedish Embassy in London

Ambassade de Suède à Londres, Royaume-Uni

Aperçu

Montagu Place is a quiet residential street behind Marble Arch in Marylebone, and the embassy of Sweden has occupied number 11 since the postwar period. The chancery is the operational centre for one of Sweden's most enduring bilateral relationships outside the European Union: the United Kingdom hosts an estimated 90,000 to 100,000 Swedish nationals (one of the largest single Swedish diasporas in Europe), is Sweden's third-largest single trading partner, and remains a central partner across defence (NATO membership shared since 2024), security policy, fintech and creative industries. The embassy houses a substantial Migration section for UK residents and third-country nationals applying for Swedish residence permits, a Consular section for the Swedish national community, and the bilateral political and economic chancery.

Services de Visa

The Migration section processes Swedish residence-permit applications (work permits, EU Blue Card, study permits, family reunification, ICT inter-company transfer, sambo permits for cohabiting partners of Swedish residents) for applicants in the United Kingdom — Migrationsverket online filing via migrationsverket.se with biometrics taken at the embassy. Schengen short-stay visas (Type C) for travel to Sweden are issued to third-country nationals resident in the UK on long-stay visas who do not benefit from Schengen visa-free travel — including a substantial population of Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Nigerian, South African, Chinese, Vietnamese and Filipino UK residents. British passport-holders do not need a visa for short-stay travel to Sweden under the Schengen visa-waiver arrangement that applies to UK nationals post-Brexit.

Services Consulaires

The Consular section serves the substantial Swedish national community across the United Kingdom — passport renewal (biometric and ordinary), ID-card issuance, civil-status notification of births and marriages abroad to Skatteverket, Personnummer and Samordningsnummer support for Swedish residents abroad, voter registration for Swedish parliamentary and European Parliament elections (the embassy is a polling station), notarial certifications, certified translations into Swedish, and assistance in detention, hospitalisation, repatriation or bereavement. The community is concentrated in London (Wimbledon and the southwest London suburbs in particular, dating from the postwar migration), Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham and the south coast. Six Honorary Consulates extend Sweden's reach into the regions and to Gibraltar.

Soutien Commercial et à l'Exportation

Sweden-UK bilateral trade has been reshaped by Brexit but remains substantial — the United Kingdom is among Sweden's top five trading partners. The embassy's economic section coordinates with Business Sweden's London office, the Swedish Chamber of Commerce for the United Kingdom, the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise (Svenskt Näringsliv) European desk, and UK regional development agencies. Key trade flows include automotive (Volvo Cars, Polestar and Scania into UK fleet markets), pharmaceuticals (AstraZeneca's London-Cambridge headquarters operations and UK-Sweden R&D), telecommunications and 5G (Ericsson into UK operator networks), fintech and software (Klarna, Spotify, iZettle, Truecaller into UK financial-services and consumer markets), and the creative and entertainment industries.

Opportunités d'Investissement

Investment promotion is anchored by the UK as Sweden's largest source of foreign direct investment after the United States and Germany, and by substantial Swedish investment into the UK — particularly in financial-services (Swedish banks SEB, Handelsbanken and Nordea operate UK branches and subsidiaries), fintech (Klarna's London base, iZettle pre-PayPal-acquisition), commercial real estate, and the consumer-goods retail sector (H&M, IKEA, Hennes & Mauritz extending UK store networks). The embassy supports Swedish scale-up engagement with the London venture-capital ecosystem, the Cambridge-Oxford technology corridor and the Edinburgh-Glasgow fintech cluster.

Programmes Culturels et Éducatifs

Cultural and educational programming runs through the Swedish Institute London presence at the Swedish Church (Ulrika Eleonora Church in Marylebone, a few minutes' walk from the chancery and the historic centre of the Swedish community in London), the Anglo-Swedish Society, the Anglo-Swedish Literary Foundation, and the Swedish-language teaching network at Swedish Saturday schools across the UK. Educational mobility is anchored by Erasmus+ between Swedish universities (Lund, Uppsala, Stockholm, Chalmers, KTH, SLU) and Russell Group UK institutions, the post-Brexit Turing Scheme replacing Erasmus for UK students, and the Anglo-Swedish Science Foundation joint research programmes. The embassy hosts the annual Swedish National Day reception on 6 June and supports Swedish artistic programming at the Royal Festival Hall, the BFI, and the major British literary festivals.

Zone de Service

The embassy's consular jurisdiction covers the United Kingdom — England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland — plus Gibraltar. Six Honorary Consulates (in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Manchester and Gibraltar) extend Sweden's reach into the regions for light consular relay.

The Swedish Church on Harcourt Street, a few minutes' walk from the chancery, has been the centre of the Swedish community in London since the eighteenth century.
